Grooming Brushes for Horses

Grooming brushes are used to flick dirt off or to gently polish your horse's coat. The brush's purpose is determined by the bristles' stiffness and material. Stiff (sometimes called Dandy) brushes are often made with synthetic bristles and help get the dirt and excess hair off your horse after currying. Soft or finishing brushes are often made out of natural fibers and are used to smooth the coat and distribute natural oils that were pulled up from the skin while grooming. Need help getting started? Softest

Made to lightly dust, spread natural oils, and polish the horse's coat, these brushes are gentle on skin and hair. Bristles bend easily and flick dust and debris off. They can also be called "finishing" brushes.

Medium

Often containing multiple bristle materials, these brushes dust while also grabbing larger chunks of debris. Medium brushes are tougher on grime, skin, and hair yet still have flexible bristles.

Stiffest

Meant for raking dirt and debris off the coat, these bristles are not flexible and are toughest on skin and hair. Large clumps of debris and loose hair get trapped in the inflexible bristles and are brushed off.
