Safety Measures

  • ASTM/SEI CertifiedASTM/SEI Certified

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) writes widely known safety standards, then an independent testing laboratory called the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) ensures that manufacturers design helmets that are up to par. The ASTM/SEI testing standard requires impact and retention tests, as well as a visor test to make sure that the visor breaks away or flexes without injuring the face.

  • European CertifiedEuropean Certified

European standards are put together by a committee comprised of representatives from countries in the EU. In addition to impact, retention, and visor tests, these safety standards demand that helmets withstand penetration and crushing. The inclusion of the latter two tests is thought to produce safer helmets than those only certified to ASTM standards by SEI.

  • SNELL CertifiedSNELL Certified

The Snell Foundation uses what is considered the most demanding testing procedure for riding helmets. Their tests include all aspects of the other certifications but with more stringent standards. Snell drops the helmets from a greater height during the impact test onto a variety of differently-shaped anvils, has the highest crush resistance rating, and ensures the helmet offers sufficient head coverage without sacrificing the rider's field of vision.

  • MIPSMIPS

MIPS, or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, is an additional layer embedded in some helmets to reduce strain on the brain upon a fall. When the helmet makes contact with a surface, the low-friction MIPS layer allows the head to move 10 to 15 mm in all directions to dissipate impact on the brain.

  • ERT FoamERT Foam

ERT, or Energy Reduction Technology, consists of soft polymer pads incorporated into the helmet design that mitigates rotational and linear impact. With the motto "Softer is Safer", ERT works immediately and is most effective with lower-impact falls.

The TuffRider R50 MIPS Riding Helmet was created with both safety and comfort and mind, so you can enjoy worry-free rides. ABS ventilation combined with a stainless steel mesh ensures good airflow throughout the helmet, allowing you to stay cool in the saddle. A Coolmax washable lining and PU leather harness provide even further comfort, while the MIPS Directional Impact System offers additional protection in case of a rotational fall. The dial-fit at the back gives the R50 the adjustability it needs to fit any rider.

Tips for Measuring for a HelmetWear your hair in a very low, tight ponytail at the base of your neck. Do not measure over a hairnet. Use a soft fabric tape and ensure it is snug and not too loose while you take the measurement from the side of the head. If you are between sizes, round up to the larger size, but ideally try on both the smaller and larger size to determine the most accurate and best fit. The best and safest helmet is the one the fits you the best.

How to Measure for a HelmetPlace a fabric tape measure around your head, leaving 3/4" to 1" of space above your eyebrows. Place the tape measure at the widest part of your head, over the bump on the back of your skull. Take the measurement in centimeters from the 0 on the tape measure. Make note of the measurement in centimeters, repeat the process 1-2 times to ensure a consistent measurement. Refer to the Tuffrider sizing chart to determine your best size. Note that this is only a guide and does not  constitute a guarantee as to the fit of the helmet. All heads are unique in shape, changing what size is needed. Some helmets fit different shaped heads better than others.
