Tough 1 grazing muzzleI have just bought my 2nd grazing muzzle for my mini pony. We live in California, so we do not have grass all year long. My pony has a sensitivity to laminitis/foundering during grass season. The grazing muzzle is a game changer. You still need to monitor the amount of time they are on the grass as they quickly learn how to graze with it on. We used it for a year and a half before that, and she actually "ate" right through the bottom part. So, keep an eye on the part that comes in contact with the ground. You also have to remove it if you feed hay. It's almost impossible for them to eat hay with the muzzle on. I love this muzzle and could not manage this pony during grass season without it!
Needs Strap in FrontThe muzzle kept getting pushed around and even got caught up in my horse's mouth. It needs an attachment in the front so that it can't be pushed out of alignment. It has worked since we attached the front to the halter using twine.
Economical and fairly durablePros: easy to put on/off and slightly adjustable. They're not super restrictive (my horse learned to eat through the nose opening, but he is *very motivated* and did not need extreme restriction). Fairly durable, but the pasture mate has ripped it off. One of the side attachments finally tore off, but it was easy to tie on with twine. When the front middle piece came off, I did the same but the amount of twine was too tempting for the pasture mate who tore it again. I've been told that they can be riveted back together, and I'm considering having that done so I have a back up.
Cons: the Velcro attachments can get loose from mud or water getting on the hook and loop surfaces. I recommend making a keeper or two with twine to keep the ends from being rubbed down to expose the inside. The front middle attachment to the main noseband is a common weakness from those I've talked to, but if you don't have a lot of interference by a motivated pasture mate or heavy rubbing from the wearer, it'll probably last.
I used a Tough 1 synthetic noseband liner and found no rubbing. My horse wore it 4 to 8 hours a day for about 3 months at the end of the grass season, and I'm satisfied given the low price, potential to repair it, size, appetite of the horse, and destructiveness of the pasture mate. The bottom material is worn a little unevenly due to the horse using the nose hole, but he didn't significantly wear the hole much bigger.
Great grazing muzzle! This muzzle has worked very well; it fits closely on the halter, which should prevent Houdinis from rubbing it off. Also, the area around the nostrils is open, so no need to do “surgery” on the piece, as other styles have required to allow sufficient air intake. Plus it comes in different sizes - highly recommended!
