Raised copper ribs gently discourage leaning on the bit and the sweet iron/copper mix encourages salivation and suppleness while providing a pleasant taste. The sliding "gag" mechanism allows the horse to respond first to the poll pressure provided by the leverage of the shank tipping the purchase forward before the mouthpiece is fully engaged and applies pressure to the tongue and mouth.
