Key Features
-
Non-ToxicNon-Toxic
Bits that are made from non-toxic materials, unlike most plastics, rubbers, and metals, are a safer option for horses who need a gentler bit.
-
Increased PalatabilityIncreased Palatability
Bits that increase palatability often incorporate sweet metals (such as copper and iron) or flavored plastics which encourage the horse to salivate, relax their jaw, and accept the bit. They may be inlaid into the bars, be the roller or lozenge, or make up the entire bar.
-
Leverage PressureLeverage Pressure
These bits use indirect pressure that multiplies the amount of force exerted on the horse's mouth, nose, or poll. They are used by riders who have little to no contact or are looking for more finesse and control.
-
Direct PressureDirect Pressure
Bits that use direct pressure have a 1:1 ratio where the pressure exerted on the reins will be the same pressure felt in the mouth. They are used by riders who often have contact with their horse's mouth.
The Comfort Snaffle Wide Barrel mouthpiece featured on the Myler Western Dee Ported MB 04 Bit with Hooks is the Myler alternative to the traditional three-piece mouthpiece commonly used in snaffle bits. When the reins are engaged, the mouthpiece rotates fully onto the horse's tongue in order to apply the necessary tongue pressure to teach a horse to give to the bit or break at the poll. This Level 2 mouthpiece features a 1/4" port that introduces tongue relief.

Additional Information
Cheek Piece Hooks:
This Western Dee snaffle cheek piece has been modified with a unique feature called "hooks" that are actually rings in the dee that keep the bridle fixed in place and create two rein positions. Attaching the headstall to the top hooks holds the bit in the correct position in the horse's mouth, rather than letting it slide around the ring like a traditional dee or loose ring. Attaching the rein behind the hook to the cheek piece ring creates a direct rein, whereas attaching the rein to the rein hook at the bottom creates an indirect rein, allowing the rider to lift the cheek and use the Independent Side Movement feature of the mouthpiece.
Overall, the hooks make this Western Dee snaffle a more versatile cheek piece, allowing the rider to transition from direct rein action to indirect rein action without changing the bit or increasing leverage.
Ergonomic Design:
The unique curved bars of all Myler bits are ergonomically designed to accommodate the natural anatomy of the horse's mouth, wrapping the bars and lips instead of pinching as the mouthpiece rotates onto the tongue. This curved design also provides significantly more space for the horse's tongue underneath the bit, allowing the horse to comfortably swallow when the reins are not engaged.
The barrel in the center is same width as the bars of the mouthpiece, and therefore applies the same amount of pressure on the tongue. This style of "wide barrel" distributes pressure more kindly than traditional bit centerpieces, and also creates the Independent Side Movement unique to Myler bits!
The Low Port featured on this mouthpiece allows the horse to swallow when he is moving forward, relaxed.
Independent Side Movement:
The barrel at the center of the mouthpiece is not a roller, but rather a bushing that allows each side of the bit to move independently of the other. When the rider engages one rein on a traditional bit, the entire mouthpiece moves, creating a confusing signal for the horse. In comparison, when the rider engages one fixed rein using a Myler bit with ISM, the rider lifts only one side of the bit, giving a very clear, precise signal to the horse.
Myler Philosophy:
The creators of Myler Bits, Ron, Dale and Bob Myler, offer this philosophy behind each of their bits: The bit is a communication tool between the horse and rider, and in order to effectively communicate with the horse, the rider needs a bit which allows the horse to be relaxed. Keeping this in mind, the Myler Bitting System is based on the concept of tongue relief. Distributing tongue pressure more evenly than rival designs Myler's unique designs offer varying degrees of tongue relief for the horse depending on his level of training and his disposition. These degrees are identified by the "Level" noted for each bit.

Sizing
Please Note: A Myler bit will normally measure 1/8” larger than the stated size because the Myler's believe that the bit should have at least 1/8” to 1/4” of bit on either side of the mouth.

Previous Feedback
Comments: I am using the Myler Flat Shank low port comfort snaffle bit MB 04 on my 21-year-old performance mare and my 15-year-old ranch horse. It is working so well! I am very 100% happy with this bit.
