Safety Measures
-
ASTM/SEI CertifiedASTM/SEI Certified
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) writes widely known safety standards, then an independent testing laboratory called the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) ensures that manufacturers design helmets that are up to par. The ASTM/SEI testing standard requires impact and retention tests, as well as a visor test to make sure that the visor breaks away or flexes without injuring the face.
-
European CertifiedEuropean Certified
European standards are put together by a committee comprised of representatives from countries in the EU. In addition to impact, retention, and visor tests, these safety standards demand that helmets withstand penetration and crushing. The inclusion of the latter two tests is thought to produce safer helmets than those only certified to ASTM standards by SEI.
-
SNELL CertifiedSNELL Certified
The Snell Foundation uses what is considered the most demanding testing procedure for riding helmets. Their tests include all aspects of the other certifications but with more stringent standards. Snell drops the helmets from a greater height during the impact test onto a variety of differently-shaped anvils, has the highest crush resistance rating, and ensures the helmet offers sufficient head coverage without sacrificing the rider's field of vision.
-
MIPSMIPS
MIPS, or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, is an additional layer embedded in some helmets to reduce strain on the brain upon a fall. When the helmet makes contact with a surface, the low-friction MIPS layer allows the head to move 10 to 15 mm in all directions to dissipate impact on the brain.
-
ERT FoamERT Foam
ERT, or Energy Reduction Technology, consists of soft polymer pads incorporated into the helmet design that mitigates rotational and linear impact. With the motto "Softer is Safer", ERT works immediately and is most effective with lower-impact falls.
The Charles Owen My PS Riding Helmet with MIPS offers comfort and style with the latest in equestrian safety technology.
Featuring the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System ("MIPS") that was developed in Europe and has been used in other sporting helmets for years, this helmet reduces rotational motion transferred to the brain by angled impact to the head. The helmet-integrated, low-friction layer creates a way for this motion to be absorbed and redirected, without adding any additional bulk or weight to the helmet.
The My PS has an elegant look, with a smooth outer shell that is easy to wipe off. Ten vents ensure air flow to keep your head cool while the super soft and padded leather-look harness allows for a comfortable fit. The removable liner lets you wash it for a fresh feel after those summer rides. This helmet also meets stringent European safety standards, making this helmet a great choice for any serious rider.

Additional Information
What is MIPS**?
- MIPS is the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System;
- MIPS is a brain protection system;
- Rotational motion can cause brain injuries;
- The low friction layer of MIPS allows a sliding motion 10-15mm, in all directions, reducing the tangential forces transmitted to the brain during impact; and
- MIPS adds protection.
Charles Owen’s interpretation of MIPS:
- MIPS mimics the action of the scalp and protects in a similar way;
- Shearing forces can cause brain injuries that are not attenuated by traditional helmet construction; and
- MIPS adds protection to helmets already tested and certified to reduce in jury in relevant sports.
What is the benefit of MIPS in a Charles Owen helmet?
Charles Owen is known globally for producing riding helmets with multiple certifications to multiple international safety standards. By testing and certifying to several standards, Charles Owen has the opportunity to address multiple accident scenarios in their helmets, thereby increasing protection in a fall and reducing injury.
The addition of MIPS technology will essentially add a ‘top up’ to the already high performing head protection offered by the brand and Charles Owen’s mission has always been to produce helmets that are more effective against injury. It is important to note that multiple standard protection is found in each Charles Owen helmet, meaning the Ayr8® helmet purchased in Germany will have the same certifications as the one purchased in Great Britain and the same as the one purchased in the United States. This is how Charles Owen is a standard above its competitors.
The MIPS layer will add protection against tangential forces from typical impacts to the head. It will not replace the coverage already held by the helmet safety standards, but instead add to them.

Previous Feedback
Comments: I bought this helmet recently, after researching thoroughly and then trying on versions and sizes to make sure the fit was the best possible. The sales clerk was very helpful in this. The first few hours of riding (one day) I played with the adjustments and the foam conformed more to my head and it was very comfortable and secure in feeling. The second ride I was galloping full speed uphill and somehow the saddle slipped to the right and I went off, landing full length on soft ground, a good fall all told. I did not feel my head hit the ground, although I did have a little dirt in my teeth, the helmet was clean, and no obvious marks or scrapes. I rode for another 90 minutes at a fast pace and felt ok. Did all the usual check for concussion. Had a stiff shoulder and arm and a little headache the next day, otherwise fine. BUT, 3 weeks later I was a little dizzy, then woke up partially paralyzed on the right side. I got a CT scan which I probably should have done right away but COVID times etc, and I had a subdural hematoma, probably a slow build-up over 3 weeks. They drained the blood out and I am fine. so lucky!!! The helmet probably saved my life! but I am writing this just as cautionary that trauma can accumulate/manifest later.

Comments: Full disclosure, I won this awesome helmet through watching and asking questions during one of Riding Warehouse's informational video with Charles Owen on the advances in MIPS technology and help with helmet fitting.
Looks: I decided to get the navy helmet, because they stand out from the rest of the black helmets on the market. It has three understated, sporty lighter navy stripes that bring out the blue a little bit more. There are vents on the front and back, mitigated overheating (although I have not tested it yet in the summer heat). The vents are lined with a silver mesh that matches the silver Charles Owen Logo on the front and looks super sharp! The brim is black and covered with a soft leather-look material that matches the harness and ties the whole look together. Overall, it stands out in an elegant and sporty way from the sea of other traditional black helmets that all look alike.
Fit: I feel like this helmet runs a size small. I do wish I had sized up one more size to get an even more comfortable fit, but the harness does offer an even more customized and secure fit. This helmet feels VERY secure. I don't think this thing would blow off, even in a tornado. It really makes me feel more comfortable hopping up on green horses (or even my pony when he is feeling fiesty).
Extras: The helmet liner is removable, so you can easily wash it and wipe down your helmet. This helmet is the safest one on the market, which makes me feel so much safer while riding. With all of the technology invested in this helmet, I would not want to purchase another type.
