We’ve all been there — while traveling, after a long ride, or simply on a warm day, we offer our horses water and they absolutely refuse. You can tell they are hot and dehydrated, but they turn their muzzle up at that bucket filled with fresh, clean water. It’s beyond stressful for both horse and human! Enter Gallagher’s Water, an all-natural equine hydration beverage designed to enhance the flavor of water and encourage horses to drink. Learn more below!

The Story Behind Gallagher's Water

“Gallagher” was on his way to the American Eventing Championships in Lexington, Kentucky when his horse-mom offered him water during a pit stop. Gallagher did NOT like the water and neither did his trailer mates. His horse-mom added some extras to the water, making it smell like freshly cut hay. Gallagher loved it and so did his trailer mates! From then on, Gallagher never had an issue drinking, whether at a horse show or after a workout. He loves the smell and salty-sweet flavor, thus the name Gallagher’s Water!

How to Use Gallagher's Water:

Mixing Gallagher’s Water is an easy, three-step process:

  1. Fill a two-gallon bucket with water.
  2. Pour the contents of one packet into the water.
  3. Stir until mixed and serve immediately.

For best results, introduce Gallagher’s Water in a quiet setting where the horse won’t be distracted away from their beverage. Don’t give it to them for the first time while feeding or when they are in distress. If your horse isn’t used to drinking out of buckets, it may take a try or two before they are comfortable with being offered the beverage.

Gallagher's Water FAQs

Q: What ingredients does Gallagher’s Water contain?

A: Gallagher’s Water is proudly made in the USA from premium alfalfa, sugar, electrolytes, and other competition-safe, FEI-compliant ingredients.

For those with sugar-intolerant horses, the sugar content of one serving is equal to 2% of your horse’s daily sugar intake. This product was originally formulated for Gallagher, who is also a sugar-intolerant horse.

The amount of alfalfa in this product is so minuscule that you shouldn’t see your horse become “hot” from it.

Q: When should I use Gallagher’s Water?

A: You can use this product to entice your horse to drink after a workout, during travel, to aid in dispensing medication, or as treat. Even if your horse doesn’t have a problem drinking, Gallagher’s Water can be mixed with supplements or medication to ensure your horse consumes them.

You can use Gallagher’s Water one to two times daily. It should never be used as a substitute for your horse’s drinking water. Always keep fresh, clean water available to your horse and supervise your horse while drinking Gallagher’s Water to monitor how much they consume.

Q: How is Gallagher’s Water different from other hydration products?

A: Other products often just contain electrolyte additives, but do not entice the horse to actually drink. Gallagher’s Water contains flavor-enhancing ingredients as well as electrolytes. Use it to help your horse drink anything from filtered water to water that has that “egg” smell.

Q. Can Gallagher's Water be added to anything?

A: Yes, Gallagher's Water can be mixed with other supplements or needed medictions to ensure they are consumed by the horse. Adding Gallagher's Water to supplements may also be a benefical way to introduce the product to a horse who has not taken to drinking it out of bucket.

What Riders Are Saying

Josey, Marketing

“Thank goodness for Gallagher’s Water! I introduced it to my mare at home and she loved it, but the real test was offering it to her in the trailer on the way to a show. She often gets distracted when I open the trailer window and won’t even look at the water bucket. Once she realized that it was Gallagher’s Water, she chugged the whole thing! I’ve also found it to be super helpful for helping her drink on hot, humid days and after she runs cross country or does gallop sets. She thinks I’m giving her a treat every time I offer it to her!”

Alison, Web Content

“I used the Gallagher's Water electrolyte after a 2-hour trail ride to help rehydrate my horses (especially the one that peed twice on the trail)! I did not have access to warm water like the directions say to use, but the powder mixed into cold water just fine with some stirring on my part. The horse most in need of rehydration tested the water and ended up drinking his fill after the initial taste. My other horse that was ridden was not fond, and I ended up divvying the rest of the water amongst some of our other pasture ponies. They liked it plenty and were fighting to get their heads in the bucket to drink the Gallagher's Water.”

Alisha, General Manager

“I decided to try the Gallagher’s Water Hydration Cookies recipe so I could administer electrolytes to my horse in a way he would appreciate. All you have to do is mix 1 cup of uncooked oatmeal, 4 Gallagher’s Water packets, ½ cup no-sugar-added applesauce, and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil together to make 20 cookies. After you’ve made your mixture, form it evenly into balls and place on a cookie sheet, then bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Finally, I topped my Hydration Cookies off with a peppermint for a little extra sweetness. My horse loved his healthy hydration treats!”
