Safety Measures

  • ASTM/SEI CertifiedASTM/SEI Certified

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) writes widely known safety standards, then an independent testing laboratory called the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) ensures that manufacturers design helmets that are up to par. The ASTM/SEI testing standard requires impact and retention tests, as well as a visor test to make sure that the visor breaks away or flexes without injuring the face.

  • European CertifiedEuropean Certified

European standards are put together by a committee comprised of representatives from countries in the EU. In addition to impact, retention, and visor tests, these safety standards demand that helmets withstand penetration and crushing. The inclusion of the latter two tests is thought to produce safer helmets than those only certified to ASTM standards by SEI.

  • SNELL CertifiedSNELL Certified

The Snell Foundation uses what is considered the most demanding testing procedure for riding helmets. Their tests include all aspects of the other certifications but with more stringent standards. Snell drops the helmets from a greater height during the impact test onto a variety of differently-shaped anvils, has the highest crush resistance rating, and ensures the helmet offers sufficient head coverage without sacrificing the rider's field of vision.

  • MIPSMIPS

MIPS, or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, is an additional layer embedded in some helmets to reduce strain on the brain upon a fall. When the helmet makes contact with a surface, the low-friction MIPS layer allows the head to move 10 to 15 mm in all directions to dissipate impact on the brain.

  • ERT FoamERT Foam

ERT, or Energy Reduction Technology, consists of soft polymer pads incorporated into the helmet design that mitigates rotational and linear impact. With the motto "Softer is Safer", ERT works immediately and is most effective with lower-impact falls.

Combining a trendy design with the latest innovative brain protection technology, the Trauma Void EQ3 Lynx Riding Helmet stands apart from the rest! Boasting a modern design perfect for any rider. A removable Coolmax® liner wicks moisture to keep you comfortable and can be washed for a fresh feel every time. The multi-point harness provides a secure fit, while the vents across the top allow for airflow to keep you comfortable even during warm weather. Finished with a smooth outer shell that is easy to wipe down after a ride, this helmet is ideal for the casual as well as the competitive rider looking to protect their head with the latest safety technology.

Featuring the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System ("MIPS") that was developed in Europe and has been used in other sporting helmets for years, this helmet reduces rotational motion transferred to the brain by angled impact to the head. The helmet-integrated, low-friction layer creates a way for this motion to be absorbed and redirected, without adding any additional bulk or weight to the helmet.

The Lynx helmets are a universal fit best suited for riders with a variety of head shapes. A dial-fit system featured at the back of the helmet provides added adjustability for the perfect fit.

Additional Information

MIPS Technology:

Where did MIPS come from?
Over the past two decades, a small group of passionate individuals based out of Sweden have made it their mission to find a way to further protect the brain from rotational force and strain when an impact occurs during a crash. This group grew MIPS, which is short for Multi-Directional Impact Protection  System. MIPS can be found in a variety of different helmets, from motocross lids to equine riding helmets.

What exactly is MIPS?
The MIPS Brain Protection System is a helmet-integrated, low-friction layer designed to reduce rotational motion transferred to the brain from angled impacts to the head. This layer creates a way for the rotational force to be absorbed and redirected rather than transmitted to the brain during an impact. It’s held in place with flexible bands that clip the MIPS liner to the helmet’s foam in multiple anchor points. The system sounds simple, but in reality, this technology was developed and tested over countless hours in a lab.

How does it work?
MIPS works by installing a thin (0.5–0.7 mm), ventilated, custom cut low-friction layer inside the helmet liner. The layer is held in place by an assemblage of composite anchors that flex in all directions. These anchors hold the layer in place, around the head, but provide a small movement in response to angled impact. MIPS’ small movement (10-15 mm) relative to the helmet at the brief moment of an angled impact (3–10 milliseconds) allows the head to continue in the direction in which it was originally traveling. This means that some portion of the rotational forces and energies acting on the head at impact are redirected and spread out thanks to the large low-friction layer, rather than being transferred to the brain. Thanks to its thinness, lightness, and integration into the helmet’s existing ventilation, it’s rarely noticed by the wearer, even over extended periods of use.

Helmet Fitting/Measuring:

To measure for the best fit, find the circumference of the head.  To begin, use a flexible tape measure and place it 1-1/2 cm above the eyebrows, skimming the tops of the ears, take it around the back of the head to the fullest part. Using the rider’s measurement and the chart below, find the corresponding helmet for their size range.  Please note that the rider’s hair should be as worn when using the helmet.

Great helmetThis is my third TV Lynx. I previously wore One K helmets, but decided on this when I switched to MIPS. The EQ3 felt like it was sitting up on top of my head, but the Lynx fits similar to the One K Defender. Only replaced as my first one was getting close to five years old and had a minor fall.

Great All-Around HelmetThe TV Lynx is my go-to for a round head! It's lightweight, comfortable, adjustable, and has MIPS! The dial fit is the best - I never worry about it sitting well on my head.

Needed to replace helmet after a serious fallI recently purchased Trauma Void Lynx MIPS to replace the helmet that I was wearing during a recent fall. I appreciate the safety features built into this helmet. Thank you for making a helmet that fits well and looks good at the same time.

Great helmet, protected many falls! This is a great helmet! My trainer recommended it years ago. I had my first one for 4 years, and it survived 6 falls (2 of which slammed my head pretty hard on the ground). It really protected me! My neck was sore for days, but my head was completely safe and I didn’t have a concussion. I just bought another one to replace my old one. I will always trust this brand!

Nice helmet, glad I upgradedFirst off, Riding Warehouse had exceptional customer service when the first helmet I received had a small issue and getting a replacement was super easy. I chose to try this helmet due to the MIPS, replacement policy, and good (some very good) independent test results. Plus it had a flexible visor for safety, which was something i was looking for. At first, I thought the size I ordered was too small, but when I tried it without the liner it had plenty of room. So I kept it, and after a few rides the liner has conformed for a really good and snug fit. It's heavier and has less ventilation than my last helmet, but it fits much better and is probably safer. Glad I purchased this one!

Comments: Wonderful product and great service! I originally bought a small and needed to return it for a medium (I was between the two sizes). I had questions, so I made a few phone calls to customer service, and the phone was answered quickly and my questions solved by nice and smart folks! I love how they include a return label in the package if needed. The medium fits me and is comfortable. I love the adjustable knob so I can wear my hair down or up. Quick shipping with tracking.

Comments: Full disclosure - I did not buy this helmet from Riding Warehouse (My favorite equine shopping site), but I thought I would share this review. Fourth brand of helmet I have owned, and hands down the most comfortable. My beloved Troxel Sierra had to go after I fell with head impact. Tipperary helmets are too long and narrow and do not fit me. My current Ovation is lightweight and fairly comfortable, but the Lynx is amazing, though heavier than the Ovation. I forget that I am wearing it. Of course am very pleased to have increased protection, though hopefully will not have an opportunity to test that out.

Comments: I bought a Trauma Void Lynx based on good reviews and MIPS technology. I was replacing another brand helmet that cracked after a bad fall. Having sustained a moderate concussion, the MIPS investment was a "no brainer." The sale price sealed the deal. The Lynx is very well made and extremely comfortable. It covers better than my last helmet but doesn't look bulky. Even my non-horsey husband thinks it looks sharp. The sizing is a bit off. I measure just within the Medium range but was glad that I ordered a large, which fit perfectly. Highly recommend!

Comments: Absolutely love this helmet. It is lightweight and cool and the dial fit makes it easy to get a custom fit each ride. I hope I never need to find out how great the MIPS technology is, but I like knowing it is there, just in case.

Comments: I had used another helmet brand before and it gave me a headache after a while. The traumavoid helmet fits snug as it should and NO HEADACHE! I have been doing 2 hour rides and forget it's on. My head is round oval ish. And big. I have a big head. BUT the large would be too big and the medium with that lynx dial...perfect! I've ridden on hot days and my head is still comfortable. I can feel the helmet's outer shell is hot, but my head inside isn't. Yay! I'd recommend this helmet. It's really a good buy.

Comments: I love this helmet! I have been waiting for a helmet with the MIPS technology. Unfortunately, my oval head did not fit into the EQ3 Trauma Void Mips helmets, so I waited for the Lynx and it works super well. It is very comfortable, keeps my head cool and has the latest safety features. My barn mate has the EQ and she is also very happy with hers.

Comments: I love this helmet. I noticed that the previous reviewer has a long oval head and likes the fit - well, I have a very round head and love the fit. I have a tough time finding helmets because my head is round. I think the dial fit on the Lynx makes a huge difference - the other helmet I have that fits well is a Uvex, which also has a dial. But for me the killer feature is the MIPS technology, which is widespread in other helmet sports but frustratingly only trickling slowly into equestrian helmets. I am glad the Lynx fits me well, because the only other available brand option right now is Charles Owen, and my head is so round I cannot wear those at all. The Lynx is heavier than my Uvex - noticeably so if I hold one in each hand - but I don't notice when I'm riding. I would prefer a little more ventilation, but I was kind of spoiled by my Uvex in that respect and I would consider the ventilation in the Lynx better than average for equestrian helmets in general.

Comments: My head isn't just oval-shaped, it's a long oval, and the dial-fit made the Lynx fit me as well as my dial-fit Ovation schooler. There is still a little play side-to-side when the helmet is snug front-to-back, but a long oval head is extremely hard to fit and this helmet fits as well as any I've tried and is secure on my head. People with oval head shapes should do nicely with the Lynx. This is a much nicer helmet than the Ovation schooler I'm used to (though of course, it's correspondingly more expensive). The Lynx has a leather harness and a nicer look to it, as well as more coverage at the occipital area, plus of course the MIPS. After a recent broken ankle from falling off my horse, I want to stay as safe as possible. I think I'm going to love this helmet! It has vents, a removable liner, and the harness doesn't annoy my skin. The only downside to this may be the additional weight since I'm used to the super-lightweight Ovation schoolers. However, this helmet should be safer, so that's a very worthwhile tradeoff. The brim on this one isn't quite even, one side came out of the box flexed a little bit more than the other, but for me, that's not worth an exchange. This helmet's a keeper.
