Overview

Combing a trendy design with the latest innovative brain protection technology, the Trauma Void EQ3 Safety Riding Helmet stands apart from the rest!

Featuring the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System ("MIPS") that was developed in Europe and has been used in other sporting helmets for years, this helmet reduces rotational motion transferred to the brain by angled impact to the head. The helmet-integrated, low-friction layer creates a way for this motion to be absorbed and redirected, without adding any additional bulk or weight to the helmet.

The Trauma Void EQ3 also boasts a modern design perfect for any rider. A removable Coolmax® liner wicks moisture to keep you comfortable and can be washed for a fresh feel every time. The leather chip strap provides an elegant look, while the vents across the top allow for airflow to keep you comfortable even during warm weather. Finished with a smooth outer shell that is easy to wipe down after a ride, this helmet is ideal for the casual as well as the competitive rider looking to protect their head with the latest safety technology.

Product Details

MIPS Technology:

Where did MIPS come from?
Over the past two decades, a small group of passionate individuals based out of Sweden have made it their mission to find a way to further protect the brain from rotational force and strain when an impact occurs during a crash. From this group grew MIPS, which is short for Multi-Directional Impact Protection  System. MIPS can be found in a variety of different helmets, from motocross lids to equine riding helmets.

What exactly is MIPS?
The MIPS Brain Protection System is a helmet-integrated, low-friction layer designed to reduce rotational motion transferred to the brain from angled impacts to the head. This layer creates a way for the rotational force to be absorbed and redirected rather than transmitted to the brain during an impact. It’s held in place with flexible bands that clip the MIPS liner to the helmet’s foam in multiple anchor points. The system sounds simple, but in reality, this technology was developed and tested over countless hours in a lab.

How does it work?
MIPS works by installing a thin (0.5–0.7 mm), ventilated, custom cut low-friction layer inside the helmet liner. The layer is held in place by an assemblage of composite anchors that flex in all directions. These anchors hold the layer in place, around the head, but provide a small movement in response to angled impact. MIPS’ small movement (10-15 mm) relative to the helmet at the brief moment of an angled impact (3–10 milliseconds) allows the head to continue in the direction in which it was originally traveling. This means that some portion of the rotational forces and energies acting on the head at impact are redirected and spread out thanks to the large low-friction layer, rather than being transferred to the brain. Thanks to its thinness, lightness, and integration into the helmet’s existing ventilation, it’s rarely noticed by the wearer, even over extended periods of use.

Measuring & Fitting:

Helmet Measuring:

To measure for the best fit, find the circumference of the head. To begin, use a flexible tape measure and place it 1-1/2 cm above the eyebrows, skimming the tops of the ears, take it around the back of the head to the fullest part.  To find your size, round up to the nearest centimeter and go up one size from that measurement. Please note that the rider’s hair should be as worn when using the helmet.

Fitting:

Place the helmet level on the rider's head. If the helmet contains a dial, adjust the dial to fit the rider securely. Without harnessing the chinstrap, have the rider shake their head from side-to-side and front-to-back, check for movement and ask the rider if there is an even pressure or if there is any pinching or air pockets.  If the helmet does not have a dial-fit system and there is movement from side to side but not front to back, try the oval liner, which is thicker on the sides than front to back.  If there is movement overall or front to back, try going down a size. Once you’ve found a secure fit, move the brim of the helmet up and down, and the rider’s eyebrows should wiggle.

Customer Reviews

Previous Feedback

Comments: I love this helmet. It's really beautiful looking AND it's comfortable. I wore it all day at a show and I forgot that I had it on to be honest. It's a fraction of the cost of other helmets, it's just as safe (or safer) and it has a beautiful sleek profile. Will be recommending it to all my students!
From: Becca - Summerville, South Carolina, USA

Comments: The Trauma Void helmet is a must! After a good friend of mine took a serious fall early this year, I took advantage of a sale and bought this helmet. It took three tries to get the right size (size up!), but RW was awesome as usual and accommodated the exchanges by mail- for free. This helmet is cool, lightweight, and comfortable. It takes a little time to get used to the slight slip the MIPS liner gives the helmet, but I don't notice it at all anymore. I've ridden with it for several hot summer months in the arena and on the trail, and I still really love it! Highly recommended.
From: Katherine - Sacramento, California, USA

Comments: This is a very nice quality helmet that looks stylish when worn. The different liners included help alter the fit a bit to help accommodate different head shapes, and the chin strap is very comfortable. Unfortunately, I was ultimately unable to get a perfect fit due to my head being more oval-shaped. However, if you are interested in the new technology this helmet offers, I highly recommend taking advantage of the RW easy return process and trying it out!
From: Jacquelyn - Santa Maria, California, USA

Comments: Super sadly, this helmet will not fit well/comfortably if you have a long oval shaped head. I'm very hopeful they will add this option to their available options in the future!
From: Jenny- Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, USA

Comments: I am really excited that this technology has come to riding helmets. Sadly, this one is just too round for my oval head. Hoping they come out with more options soon!
From: Maggie- Maryland, USA

Comments: I feel I need to report that my Trauma Void EQ3 seems to be somewhat falling apart - that is, one of the vents has slipped out of place and there is apparently some kind of dried glue around the edges that must once have been holding it in place. It makes me doubt the integrity of the structure of this helmet. I'd include a picture if there was a way. My helmet is a year old, but because Covid was last year it has had very little use, and certainly no blows or shocks. I would not buy this brand and model again because of this.
