Additional Information
Measuring a Horse for Pegasos:
Accurate hoof measurements should be taken directly after trim! Measurements of the hoof should be taken at the widest and longest point when using a measuring tape. When measuring untrimmed hooves or hooves currently in shoes, it is suggested that you allow for the 5 – 7 mm (13/64 – 9/32 of an inch) that will be trimmed from the hoof before shoeing. The width measurement is generally the most important as the shoes have an extra length that can be trimmed off.
Trimming Pegasos Shoes:
The width measurement is generally the most important as the shoes have an extra length that can be trimmed off. If the length of the shoe on the chart is not long enough for the hoof, choose the next size up and trim excess width from the shoe. All of the TERRAFLEX™ shoes can be trimmed and shaped to fit front and rear hooves as required. You can trim the shoe before or after application. When gluing, trace the hoof onto the shoe then trim the excess off before application. Please Note: Leave an approximate 2 mm – 3 mm (5/64 – 1/8 of an inch) of shoe past the outer edge of the hoof wall to cope with expansion and movement.
For nailing application, it is recommended to use E 5 Nails as the E head of the nail (approx. 4 x 4 mm) fits perfectly into the nailing groove of our shoes, also acceptable is to use a smaller (E 4) or larger (E 6) nail, though this depends on the hoof size, please consult your Farrier. For gluing applications, it is recommended to use 3M Super-Fast Repair Adhesive (60 to 90 sec. work time) it also can be used for hoof repairs due to the fast setting.
Pegasos Removal:
When removing your shoe, ensure each nail is removed individually. A shoe cannot be pulled off as a traditional shoe can.
Shoeing Cycle:
The lifetime of the shoes will depend on various factors, how your horse moves, what surface you are riding on, and if there is an incline. The approximate length for the average wear is 180-220 miles, however, if your horse is easier on their shoes they could last longer.
RCC vs. CCC:
The RCC shoes have two clips and a rollover, while the CCC shoes have three clips like a regular shoe. Whether you decide to select the RCC or CCC for the front or hind hooves is a personal preference.
