Shank Bits

Often used in Western disciplines such as cutting, barrel racing, and ranch work, Western shank bits operate on leverage. When the shanks are engaged, they multiply the pressure applied to the tongue and bars of the mouth. As a general rule, the longer the shanks, the greater the leverage and resulting pressure. Shank bits are also available with a variety of mouthpieces, including non-jointed (solid and mullen mouthpieces), single-jointed, and double-jointed designs with a dogbone or other center link.
