Horse Hydrator is composed of a screen filter on both ends and a KDF-55 media along with a Activated Coconut Carbon. Below are the details about both of these medias and why they are the most beneficial on the market today.
Kinetic Degradation Fluxion or KDF
Horse Hydrator uses KDF-55 process media which is made of a high purity copper-zinc granule combination and is responsible for decreasing the chlorine, iron, lead, mercury, hydrogen sulfide, magnesium, calcium carbonate, chromium, algae, fungi, bacteria and other harmful contaminants in unfiltered water. KDF is a redox filtration media, researched, developed and patented by Don Heskett, founder of KDF fluid treatment. We use this media so that through an exchange of electrons, the impurities are reduced to harmless components. For example through a reduction reaction free chlorine is reduced to a water soluble chloride ion. When water that contains hydrogen sulfide is run through the Horse Hydrator the copper (Cu+2) ion loses an electron and the sulfur gains an electron. This yields an insoluble copper sulfide and water. The insoluble particles are filtered out and the clear water is filtered through the Horse Hydrator. Iron removal via the HH occur when the KDF media changes iron ions into ferric hydroxide through an oxidation reduction process.
Activated Coconut Carbon
The second type of filtration incorporated in the Horse Hydrator is through the use of the eco-friendly coconut carbon. This type of filtration has a higher volume of microspores to trap contaminants more readily than coal or wood type carbons. It also can reproduce their natural fruit up to three times a year and collection of the shells doesn't injure the tree. Previous to their use in filters, many of the shells were wasted or burned, but now it is a renewable resource that can benefit the well-being of our horses in a win-win situation. As with many of these reactions, the contaminants are filtered or reduced to a more harmless form which leaves us with a more clear, odorless and pure tasting water our horses will enjoy, helping them increase performance and decrease health risks. " carbon filter media is produced by super-heating dried coconut husks in a low oxygen environment, using a process called pyrolysis. The resulting "biochar" husk, is a purified form of carbon, containing large amounts of cellular sized surface area, negatively charged to attract positively charged toxins. Toxins in the water become attached to the husk's carbon surfaces. Over time, the attractive charge of carbon surfaces are neutralized, making it time to change the filter.

Comments: My horse is always very skeptical about drinking water away from home. I picked up one of these a few months ago and use it at home to fill his trough. Immediately after filling with this filter, he began drinking more. I plan to pick up a second one to keep in the trailer along with a hose for use at shows and clinics, since he's reacted so favorably to it at home.

Comments: I have used 4 or 5 of these so far (on a daily basis) since I first tried one for my two horses at home. They last for about 2000 gallons so I have a log sheet in the tack room to write down the size of each bucket filled. It is not too much trouble and I can keep track of their consumption. Both horses chose to drink the filtered water when I tested it with two buckets side by side. They do drink more. The filter also cuts down on algae growth in the buckets and larger barrels. I don't drink unfiltered tap water and I want better water for my horses as well! This is much simpler than a water filter system and it is portable. I believe the cost is reasonable. I have an on/off valve attached between the filter and hose so I can walk around filling buckets without wasting water.

Comments: I saw this item at a horse show once and have read about it online. Since my new horse had a lot of problems last year, I decided to buy one of these. I didn't like going to new places and using their water that other horses have had a drink from and sometimes the water would look green and other riders would let their horse drink from it. So since using this, I feel more confident that my horse won’t be getting sick anytime soon and that she has really fresh and clean water that she loves the most and is more likely to drink it. I am really bio-secure when it comes to travel so I have to make sure I have all my own items and now I have my own water filter that my horses will always drink from and so far my horses are loving the filtered water. This product really helps to clean out the water as it goes through it and into the bucket and the water looks clearer too.
