Overview

The Freedom Feeder Extended Day Slow Feeder Hay Net creates pasture in a net!

Designed to help bring horses back to their original foraging style of feeding, the Freedom Feeder is the original slow-feed hay system made in the USA!  Freedom Feeders pioneered the slow feed movement in 2007 and have transitioned  thousands of horses back to grazing all day. Horses are designed to graze 20 hours a day and are constantly producing digestive acid – when their stomachs are empty of food they are stressed.

This amazing product provides freedom for both you and your horse.  You = no more racing home to feed or asking neighbors if you are delayed elsewhere.  Your horse = calm and happy - no more banging and pacing.

Horses need to use their lips and teeth while eating – when fed meals they gulp and wear back teeth versus incisors which can become overgrown when not using them to tear the grass.  The holes in the Freedom Feeder net mimic eating grass off the ground and the horses use their lips and front teeth to eat.

Slower feeding is beneficial for all horses, especially those prone to certain conditions such as foundering, laminitis, or ulcers and is a great way to keep a bored horse busy.

Smaller openings not only ensure safety by reducing the chance of your horse getting caught up in them, but they also help reduce waste.  Can be used with any type of hay. In general, the broader the leaf the slower it is able to go through the net.  Generally, a low-calorie and high-fiber grass hay is recommended.

Key Features

  • Smaller Hole Netting Keeps Horses Eating Longer
  • Increases feeding time, but reduces waste
  • Generous size allows you to fit up to 35 lbs of hay
  • Excellent to use in wet or windy weather!
  • 4' x 3'

Product Details

Directions for Use:

Fill the generous Extended Day Feeder with hay and lace securely shut with the string and carabiner clips that are included.  These nets can be hung on fences, box stalls, placed on the ground like a pillow, and the list goes on. They are made of 1/8″ (3mm) nylon mesh woven into squares.  This material has 275 lb. per strand of tensile strength!

From the Manufacturer:

Horses are designed to consume forage pretty much all day and night and their digestive systems are constantly producing digestive acids. When their sensitive stomachs are empty of food they are stressed, prone to colic, ulcers, and boredom leading to destructive stall vices just to mention a few of the consequences. Horses should have access to low calorie, high fiber forage at all times.

Freedom Feeder hay netSuper easy to fill. I bought one to try, and then I bought a second one because I liked it so much. As other reviews mentioned, the clips don't last long before breaking, but don't let that stop you from purchasing this net!

Best bang for your buck!I have loved my experience with this net. Though the price was a bit intimidating it has been worth every penny! I use this net for my horse's pasture in the winter. It fits close to a full bale of hay. I don't go out of my way to care for this net, it has been sitting in my pasture for a year now and still looks as good as the day I bought it. It also comes with two carabiners to hook it up to a fence.

Comments: I love these nets. My horses were very aggressive at first breaking caribiners, which I found out are supposed to break away for my horses safety, plus he made a hole. I went back and read the directions on transitioning and found their amazing warranty program. The manufacturer customer service was so helpful and now my horse is back to grazing happily.

Comments: Love these feeders and the concept behind 24/7 restrictive feeding.  My OTTB most likely had an ulcer from symptoms so instead of treating him with lots of expensive medications I treated him with good nutrition, 24/7 in this net....just like at the track.  Happy horse right away, not having to worry about where/when his next meal was coming. Problem:  flimsy carabiners included in net will need to be replaced with double-ended metal snaps.  These are easy to find at any hardware store and will last you a long time.

Comments: I was very disappointed in this feeder. I started using it in November and by January is had two holes in it- down at the bottom. It simply is not holding up. I wouldn't order it again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I have two horses, neither of whom are hard on things.

RW: We apologize that the Freedom Feeder Extended Day Slow Feeder did not work out for you! For horses not used to eating from a slow feeder, it is not unusual for them to be excitied and create holes within the feeder. It is suggested by the manufacturer that zip ties can be used to close the end of the holes, therefore allowing the horse to become accustomed to the slow feeder method. Once they realize they cannot get more hay by creating holes, the excitement and holes should subside. Comments: This hay net is amazing! We used to feed our horses constantly throughout the day - which was a huge inconvenience even with working from home. Now we fit almost all of our hay (for three horses) in the Extended Day and the Single Day Slow Feeders. The horses picked up on the hay nets quickly - we simply started by putting half of their hay in the nets and half of it free for them to adjust. I 100% recommend this product to any horse owner looking to slow their horses down and keep them busy throughout the day. My horses (two 4.5 y.o. and one 20 y.o.) used to chew on the fence and the barn when they would get bored - now we don't see them chewing on things because they are constantly eating! This is an amazing product. I was hesitant to spend so much money on a hay net initially, but I would do it over again because they work so well!
